About The Aiken Golf Club
The Aiken Golf Club traces its origins to the course built alongside the Highland Park Hotel, a project shaped by the Tufts family of Pinehurst, who hoped to connect their North Carolina resort to Aiken by way of a new highway, US 1.
John Inglis, who turned professional in 1915, expanded the layout to 18 holes, drawing on earlier work with the original designer of Shinnecock Hills and with Donald Ross in Elmsford, New York. A founding PGA member, Inglis hosted visitors including Chick Evans and the Turnesa brothers. On the recommendation of May Dunn, the first female golf professional in the United States, separate tees for women were added, believed to be the first of their kind in the country.

After the 1929 crash the hotel declined and was demolished in 1941, but the city preserved the course, which became the public Aiken Golf Club. Under head professional Joe Frasca, improvements included the stone steps at the 16th and stonework around the clubhouse. Women's Invitational Tournaments held in 1937, 1938 and 1939 drew Babe Zaharias, Patty Berg and Helen Detwiller.
