About Palmetto Golf Club
Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken is believed to be the oldest continually operated eighteen-hole golf course remaining on its original site in the Southeast, and possibly the second oldest in the United States after Chicago Golf Club.
The club dates to 1892, when Thomas Hitchcock, a sportsman from Long Island, New York, laid out four holes on the ground now occupied by the 16th, 17th and 18th holes and the practice range. Hitchcock and his wife drew wealthy families from the Northeast to Aiken, where they formed a Winter Colony and built facilities for polo, fox hunting, horseback riding and tennis. Several of the large estates raised near the golf club still stand today.

In 1901 the land and buildings were conveyed to the Whitney Trustees to safeguard them for the future. The club has leased the property from the trustees ever since, most recently under an agreement extending through 2080.
