Button Hole sits along the Woonasquatucket River, the waterway that runs through Providence and Johnston and once powered the mills of Rhode Island's industrial era. One of the factories on this urban corridor made shoes fastened with buttons, and in the era before environmental regulation its discards went into the river. Carried downstream, the buttons collected along the bank at a natural swimming hole, which neighborhood children came to call Button Hole.
The name endured for more than a century. Generations of city residents swam and played ball there before the land fell into disuse, and a small group of local advocates later reclaimed the blighted site, converting it into the urban green space that the golf facility occupies today.
