Rittswood Golf Course is an 18-hole public course set on 150 acres in Middlesex Township, about 16 miles north of Pittsburgh off Route 8.
The land spent 25 years as a cattle and chicken farm worked by Arch Ritts Sr. and his sons, Skip and Bill. In 1963 the family decided to convert the farm into a golf course, hiring designers Jim Harrison and Fred Garbin. Construction began in 1964, and the course opened in 1966, laid out with the intention of creating a challenging layout with character.
Skip Ritts and his wife Edna became sole owners in 1984 and ran the course with their three daughters, Connie, Tracie and Jennifer. Skip was an early advocate for women's golf in Western Pennsylvania, encouraging women to play on weekends and employing a female weekend starter, and the course was among the first public layouts in the region to use riding greens mowers.
