Foxburg Country Club

Foxburg Country Club's layout is said to have been conceived by Joseph Mickle Fox as an attempt to echo the Old Course at St. Andrews, though the local terrain made any true copy impossible. What emerged instead is a short course with narrow fairways and very small, undulating greens, where distance off the tee counts for little unless it is paired with accuracy and a good eye for reading putts.

Fox, a member of a land- and oil-rich Philadelphia family, traveled to England in 1874 with the All-American Cricket Team for a series of matches, including one in Edinburgh. Afterward he visited St. Andrews to see golf played at its home, where he was taken under the wing of Old Tom Morris, four-time Open champion and the club's professional. Morris taught him the basics of the game and sold him a set of clubs and gutta-percha balls to carry back to America.
