Birdsfoot Golf Course

Birdsfoot Golf Course takes its name from the birdsfoot trefoil that grows across the property as a dense green ground cover dotted with small yellow flowers. A member of the pea family, the plant is named for its clusters of seed pods, which resemble a bird's foot.

The course occupies part of what was Buffalo Creek Farms, land once owned by Alexander H. Lindsay and his wife, Betty G. Lindsay. Lindsay was an attorney involved in a number of civic efforts, among them the promotion of the Allegheny Valley Expressway. He also farmed and took a keen interest in agronomy, favoring birdsfoot trefoil as a hay crop both for its quality and for its longevity, as it returns year after year well beyond the typical lifespan of forage crops such as clover and alfalfa.
