About Rich Maiden Golf Course
Rich Maiden Golf Course traces its origins to 1931, when Fleetwood native Jacob "Jake" Merkel set out to build an affordable public course during the Great Depression. Working without an architect, Merkel laid out and constructed the original nine holes himself on farmland straddling Maidencreek and Richmond Townships — the two names were combined to create "Rich Maiden." The course opened in 1932, at a time when public golf was scarce in Berks County, and became known locally as "Little Rich Maiden," a layout considered approachable for newcomers while still holding interest for stronger players.

The course grew to 18 holes in 1946–47, along with a larger clubhouse, locker rooms, showers and an expanded grill area. Several features from that period survive, including the Quarry Hole at No. 12. Old stone quarries sit scattered across the property, and remnants of original greens and ponds remain visible.
