Cumberland Golf Club opened in the summer of 1961 on roughly 150 acres of rolling farmland in Pennsylvania's Cumberland Valley, with land history dating to the late 1700s. The layout was designed by James Harrison and plays from four sets of tees, stretching from about 5,800 to 6,900 yards.
The property includes a large brick house that once served as a toll stop and tavern along Route 11, known as the Black Horse Tavern, where settlers traveling between Shippensburg and Carlisle found room and board. Soldiers from both sides of the Civil War passed through, and local legend holds that a young boy haunts one of the upstairs rooms.
Donn Mowery bought the course in 1969, and his sons Joe, Jim, John and Jay manage the club. A 4,000-square-foot clubhouse and restaurant were added in 2001.
