Monterey Country Club sits on terrain shaped by a pre-historic glacier, framed by Mount Dunlap and Monterey Peak in south-central Pennsylvania. Built before the 1890s, it ranks among the oldest golf courses in the United States.
The layout rewards accuracy and position in the style of an earlier era. The opening hole, a 387-yard dogleg that crosses a brook, plays as the toughest on the card. The 5th features a Scottish-style mound running the full width of the fairway short of the green, while the 7th asks for a precise iron into a bowl-shaped green.
History surrounds the property. In July 1863, troops retreating from Gettysburg fought the Monterey Skirmishes along the road bordering the first green, and a cottage of the former Monterey Inn stood nearby. President Eisenhower played here during visits to Camp David.
