About Black Butte Ranch - Glaze Meadow Golf Course

Black Butte Ranch sits in Central Oregon beneath the peaks of the Cascade Range, which rose between roughly five and two million years ago through earthquakes and volcanic activity. Black Butte itself, the resort's namesake, took shape about one and a half million years ago. As with many volcanic mountains, meltwater travels through interior tubes and passages before emerging at the surface; Paulina Springs is the largest such spring on the property.

The surrounding land has a long human history. Big Meadow was once a lake that filled with sediment and vegetation to become a marsh before drying into open meadow. Native American oral history identifies Paulina Springs as a camp along migration routes between the Great Basin and the Oregon Coast, supported by a cache of bi-faced stone tools found nearby and dated to about 1,000 years ago.

An 1878 alternate route of the Santiam Wagon Road crossed what is now ranch property; marked posts identify two visible stretches, one beside Lupine Lake and one just west of the Glaze Meadow sport shop.
