Pryor Creek Golf Course

Pryor Creek Golf Course began as the Earl Ward Golf Course, a municipal layout built through the efforts of the city's park board, local officials and a long roster of volunteer golfers whose donated labor and time shaped the property.

In 1952, then-Mayor Earl Ward secured a lease on roughly 535 acres of government land overseen by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Construction of the first nine holes followed in 1953. In those early days the putting surfaces were smoothed with a drag device before each player putted. Private donations and volunteer work also produced a concrete block building used as a pro shop and equipment storage, and that original structure still stands on the grounds today.
