About Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club

The land beneath the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club has a history reaching back to the early 1940s, when it held a U.S. Navy recreational facility known as the Navy Air Technical Training Center, or "South Base," an annex to the Norman Naval Air Station north of town at the site of today's Max Westheimer Airport.

Construction of a golf course began in 1949 through a partnership with the Navy under University of Oklahoma president George Lynn Cross, with Oklahoma-born architect Perry Maxwell engaged for the design. The course opened for play in January 1951.

A thorough renovation by architect Robert Cupp, funded by university supporters including namesake Jimmie Austin, was finished in 1996 and kept faith with Maxwell's original ideas. Further work on the course, infrastructure and facilities, led by architect Tripp Davis, was completed in 2017.
