About McAlester Country Club
McAlester Country Club traces its origins to 1911, when a group of local citizens organized the club. The land beneath it — 160 acres that had been Indian Territory only a few years earlier — was first rented in 1910 for $32.50 a year, and the club purchased the full acreage outright in 1914 for $2,400. The driving force behind the undertaking was Melvin Cornish, a McAlester attorney who served as the club's first president.

Among the earliest challenges the board confronted was a pest house standing near what is now the first green. Such buildings were used at the time to quarantine people with communicable diseases, and this one still held several smallpox patients when the property changed hands. The board closed it so that construction of the golf course could proceed.
At an April 1911 board meeting, plans were sought for a building measuring 40 by 60 by 16 feet. Construction began that June, and the open-air pavilion was completed in September at a cost of $8,000.
