About Youngstown Country Club

Youngstown Country Club traces its origins to 1898, when about 50 young men and women of Youngstown formed the Mahoning Golf Club. Within a year they had completed a nine-hole course and a modest frame clubhouse on the Bissell farm, then beyond the city limits but within walking distance of the end of the Elm Street trolley line. That original clubhouse still stands on North Heights Street, near what is now the northern edge of Wick Park. The club took its present name in 1909.

In the early days annual dues covered the spring rental of a steamroller to level the ground and a horse-drawn mower for summer upkeep, playing fewer than nine holes was common, and Sunday golf was frowned upon.

As the city expanded, the club relocated in 1905 to land along Crandall Park and Andrews Hollow, where the hollow formed a demanding rough. A larger clubhouse with locker rooms, a reception hall and kitchen was built there, and the club hosted the Ohio State Golf Tournament in 1907.
