Elks 797 Golf Club
About Elks 797 Golf Club
Elks 797 Golf Club sits on land once farmed by Wayne F. Cox, who built the original 18-hole course largely with his own labor, with some professional help in laying out the holes. Two lakes were dug, and a two-hundred-foot steel machinery building was put up with its east side left open to serve as a covered driving range. Cox also used a tree transplanting truck to move several hundred mature evergreens from an older planting a few miles away, giving the young course an established feel.

The first nine holes opened to the public in 1960, with work continuing on the remaining nine. The completed eighteen covered roughly 145 acres and took in most of the farm. By 1980, nearby business and housing development threatened the property, and the trustees of the adjacent Elks 797 Lodge moved to preserve the original nine-hole course as a public facility for the community.
