About South Toledo Golf Club
South Toledo Golf Club began as the south course of Heather Downs Country Club, built between 1925 and 1927. It was laid out by architect William J. Rockefeller of New York, who served as the first greens superintendent at the Inverness Club from 1903 to 1927. Rockefeller frequently collaborated with Donald Ross, the architect of Inverness, and Ross is believed to have assisted with routing the Heather Downs layouts and shaping the greens. Those greens were formed by dragging scrapers behind horses to push up topsoil, producing rolling slopes and contours.

The Depression of 1929 ended plans for a 36-hole private club. In 1935 a local attorney, Otto Hankison, bought the facility. After World War II, with private club membership scarce, the South Course was separated and reopened as a public course, going on to serve golfers through the growth of the game in the decades that followed.
