Riceland Golf Course traces its roots to Tom E. Rice, an entrepreneur who set out to gather a range of services in one place. Unable to do so at his downtown Wooster location, he purchased 97 acres at the northwest corner of Rt. 30 and Rt. 57, where he established a music shop, a gasoline station, a hotel and a restaurant.
The golf course came at the suggestion of his son Belmont, an accomplished player who believed a nine-hole layout would draw additional visitors. Rice bought 145 acres on the south side of Rt. 30 for the project, and the nine-hole course opened in 1922.
Travelers soon began stopping to play, some squeezing in a quick round while their cars were serviced at the garage. Weekend and holiday crowds grew heavy enough that Rice weighed adding another nine holes, or alternatively croquet courts, tennis courts and horseshoe pitching grounds.
