Fairfield Greens traces its origins to 1969, when the layout now known as South Trace opened as Pleasant Run Country Club. The name came from the Pleasant Run Farms housing subdivision across the road, which was showcased as a Homearama community that same year with the golf course and country club as its focal point. The design came from architect Jack Kidwell, responsible for a number of other courses in the region.
Early photographs show that the community's tennis courts once stood in the parking area behind the seventh green, while the neighborhood pool occupied what is now the South Trace parking lot below the clubhouse.
The country club ran into financial difficulty in its first decade. In late 1978, the City of Fairfield, under Mayor Bugs Phalen, arranged to buy the property, and the facility reopened the following year as the municipally owned Fairfield Golf Club.
