About Tamer Win Golf & Country Club
Tamer Win Golf and Country Club in Cortland, Ohio traces its origins to founder Charles E. Winch, who came to the game as a nine-year-old caddie at Avalon Golf Course in Warren. He joined Avalon's maintenance crew at 13, moved to the crew at Trumbull Country Club a year later, and went on to earn an associate degree in agronomy at Rutgers University. Returning to Ohio, he worked as an assistant superintendent at Kirtland Country Club in Willoughby Hills before becoming superintendent at the Donald Ross-designed Brookside Country Club in Canton.

After marrying Eleanor Dominick, Winch raised the funds to buy an abandoned, overgrown farm in Cortland and set about converting it into a golf course. He drew advice from veteran superintendents including Carl Springer, Ethan Kirkhart and Earl Yesberger, as well as golf course builder Brent Wadsworth. The name combines "Tamer," for taming the wild acres, with the first letters of the founder's surname.
