About Portage Country Club
Portage Country Club in Akron, Ohio, dates to 1894, making it one of the oldest clubs in the United States. It was founded by Charles C. Goodrich, son of B.F. Goodrich Company founder Dr. Benjamin F. Goodrich, along with Charles G. Raymond and Bertram G. Work, both executives at the same company.
The club's early growth mirrored the expansion of Akron's rubber industry, as B.F. Goodrich, Goodyear, Firestone and General Tire were all established and headquartered in the city in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Akron grew rapidly in the 1910s, and the club became a gathering place for prominent families and their guests.

Known at first as the Portage Golf Club, it began on rural land a few miles from the present site, on the farm of Colonel George T. Perkins. A rough nine-hole layout was built around the Old John Brown House, once home to the abolitionist John Brown, with locker facilities above a nearby stable.
