Sadaquada Golf Club traces its origins to 1894, when C. Halstead Yates returned to Utica from a trip to New Jersey carrying a set of clubs with names such as brassie, cleek, lofter, mashie and putter. He and a group of friends first tested them indoors at a downtown boarding house, then tried the game in earnest at the Patten Farm on Harts Hill. Their next move was to the "Red House" on Henderson Road, a Kernan family property built in 1787 by Hugh White, founder of Whitestown, for his son. Four holes were laid out behind the house.
The club was formally established in 1895 with Walter Kernan as president and 23 charter members, dedicated to the playing and advancement of the game. The course grew to five and then six holes behind the house. An early name, St. Patrick's Club, gave way to Seddaquaia, an approximation of the native name for Whitestown. That same year the club engaged Horace Rawlins, the 1895 U.S. Open champion, as greenskeeper and instructor.
