Winding Brook sits on ground with a colorful past: more than 90 years ago the site held The White Horse Inn, a 15-room Prohibition-era landmark whose speakeasy drew figures such as Jack "Legs" Diamond and others reputed to have ties to New York City's Irish underworld. The inn's name lives on in the clubhouse bar and restaurant.
Paul J. Roth bought the former inn property in 1960 and set about designing the golf course and building the facilities. Construction took two years, and the course was among the first in the Northeast to be fitted with a complete irrigation system covering fairways, tees and greens. Its design was modeled on St. Andrews in Scotland.
The club opened on Memorial Day in 1962 as a private country club. Operating costs later led Roth to shift to a semi-private arrangement, accepting outside play and outings to help hold down member dues.
