Tuxedo Club

The Tuxedo Club's origins lie in an extraordinary building effort, when some 1,800 workers were brought in and housed in a temporary village of shanties laid out along streets given names borrowed from New York City, including Fifth Avenue, Broadway and Corso. Their mess hall took the name Delmonico's, after the fashionable Manhattan restaurant of the era.

Using only the simple tools of the period, the crews laid roughly thirty miles of graded dirt and macadam roadway and installed a combined water and sewage system described as the first complete example of its kind. They also raised the park gatehouse and police station, twenty-two cottages, two blocks of shops, the village stables, a dam, an icehouse, a swimming tank and a hatchery.
