Grand Oaks Country Club sits off Huguenot Avenue, in an area where Staten Island's rolling hills give way to quiet woodland. It adjoins the neighboring South Shore Golf Course, and the two properties together host both golf and events.
The site is tied to the history of the Rossville neighborhood. In the mid-18th century the area was called Old Blazing Star, later shortened to Blazing Star, a name drawn from a tavern that served travelers along Staten Island's western shore. In the early 1800s it was renamed Rossville after Colonel William E. Ross, a landowner, businessman and statesman who built a mansion on Staten Island modeled on Windsor Castle, known locally as the Ross Mansion or Ross Castle.
