Otsego Golf Club sits at the north end of Lake Otsego in central New York, and its origins reach back to the earliest days of golf in the United States. The course grew out of the neighboring Springfield estates of Henry L. Wardwell, a New York stockbroker who raised horses, cattle and sheep on his Pinehurst property, and Leslie Pell-Clarke, owner of the Swanswick estate, part of which is now the site of the Glimmerglass Opera. The two men had been classmates at St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire, and while Wardwell's interests ran more to farming and gardening, Pell-Clarke was a devoted golfer who had already built a nine-hole course at his winter home in Orlando, Florida, in 1892.
The club opened officially in the spring of 1894 with 12 holes laid out across the two properties. Along with Wardwell and Pell-Clarke, an 1898 club booklet lists George Hyde Clarke, A. Beekman Cox, Henry C. Bowers, John H. Bowers and William Constable among the founders.
