About Shelter Island Country Club
Shelter Island Country Club dates to 1901, when the Shelter Island Heights Association developed the course along the lines of the early Scottish-influenced layouts that followed golf's arrival in America in 1888. The design remains largely unchanged from its original form. Built first for the Heights Association and its guests, the course was later opened to public play.
The links were shaped by hand by Wesley Smith, the club's first grounds superintendent, using picks, shovels, horses and donkey carts. The clubhouse was constructed by Charles Corwin from lumber shipped by schooner from Connecticut to Piccozzi's dock and carted up to the hilltop.

When the Heights Association moved to close the course in 1942, William Congdon, who had worked there since 1920, leased it and ran it with his wife, Olive, for the next 34 years. George Blados leased and operated the club from 1976 until 1978. Golf has been played here continuously since the club's founding.
