About Sleepy Hollow Country Club
Sleepy Hollow Country Club traces its origins to the late 19th century, when Colonel Elliott Fitch Shepard — a lawyer who founded the New York State Bar Association in 1876 — acquired more than 500 acres on the heights above the Hudson River, north of Tarrytown. His wife, Margaret, was the eldest daughter of William H. Vanderbilt and a granddaughter of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt.
The couple commissioned the architectural firm of McKim, Mead & White for their manor house, and Stanford White produced a 75-room Victorian residence in the Italian villa manner, with patterned ceilings, detailed cornice work, hand-carved mahogany paneling, a ballroom and a sweeping staircase inside the main entrance.

A broad terrace looks out over the Hudson Valley and the sunken formal gardens below. The gatehouses at the club's entrance and exit were built from heavy carved stone pillars, with ironwork gates; both were imported from France.
