Whiteface Club & Resort
About Whiteface Club & Resort
Whiteface Club & Resort sits on the shore of Lake Placid, with Whiteface Mountain rising in the distance. The property's history dates to 1882, when Oliver Abel built the Westside, a three-story, 40-room inn for summer visitors — the origin of what grew into the Whiteface Inn and Resort.
Golf was likely played informally on the grounds in 1896 and 1897, and the club was formally established and recognized by the USGA in 1898, placing it among the earliest golf clubs in the Adirondacks, a region home to some of the country's first courses.

In the 1930s, inn manager Henry Haynes turned the resort toward national conventions and business meetings, a shift that funded expansion across the property. During that period, golf course architect John van Kleek, consulting with Walter Hagen, redesigned and lengthened the course to championship proportions.
