Emerald Greens is an 18-hole course in Gouverneur, privately owned and operated, and the only 18-hole layout within roughly 20 miles of the village. It is one of just four privately owned and operated courses in St. Lawrence County.
The property opened in 1965 as the Jim/Mar driving range, established by Jim and Margaret Rubar of Gouverneur, who built and designed the original nine holes before selling in the 1970s. Four local families then ran it as the Four by Fore Golf Course, selling in the late 1980s to Peter Ilion. After a period of receivership, the course was run as Gouverneur Greens by Larry and Linda Hance from 1996, sold at public auction in 1998 to Curt Flick, and purchased later that year by John and Mary Cunningham, who renamed it Emerald Greens.
The Cunninghams built and designed the second nine, added gradually with input from the membership and work by local contractors, bringing water into six holes and defining fairways and rough across the course. A spring-fed reservoir between the 10th and 13th holes supplies irrigation, drawn by a repurposed fire truck acting as the pump. The full 18 holes were completed in the spring of 2019.
