Livingston Country Club traces its origins to the summer of 1927, when a nine-hole layout called the Geneseo Country Club opened for its first season with a converted farmhouse on the property serving as the clubhouse. The course was laid out by Seymour Dunn, a well-known instructor and architect whose other New York designs included Saranac Inn Golf and Country Club, the links at the Lake Placid Club Resort, Tuscarora Golf Club, Craig Wood Golf & Country Club, Locust Hill Country Club and Ticonderoga Country Club, along with work in New Jersey, Mississippi, Florida and Europe.
The club's first golf professional was Walter Bemish, who had earlier spent eight years at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester and held course records there and at other area clubs. He was an early adopter of slow-motion film in teaching lessons, and he ran a golf school in downtown Rochester with his brothers Charles and Donald.
A clubhouse addition opened in 1961, when the club also began welcoming the public to its golf and social events.
