Van Cortlandt Golf Course sits in the North Bronx near the Yonkers border and holds the distinction of being the oldest public golf course in the United States. Known locally as "Vanny," it is among the most accessible New York City courses by mass transit, with the #1 train stopping a short walk away. Its long history includes rounds played by figures such as Babe Ruth, Willie Mays, Joe Louis and the Three Stooges.
A renovation carried out under architect Stephen Kay brought seven new greens, new tee boxes, additional cart paths, reworked bunkers and significantly improved drainage. The layout occupies a park-like setting within the city limits.
