About Washoe County Golf Course
Washoe County Golf Course dates to 1917, when it was laid out by golf instructor Mrs. Gourtley Dunn Webb. It is believed to be one of the earliest courses in the American West designed by a woman, giving the property an unusual place in regional golf history.
The course opened as a private nine-hole club for members and grew along with the Truckee Meadows community, becoming a public course in 1936 in the years following the Great Depression. As Reno developed from a railroad and mining town into the largest city in Northern Nevada, the course became a long-standing local recreational landmark.

During the 1930s, Washoe was substantially reworked as part of a WPA-era project. That construction and the improvements that came with it shaped the classic layout golfers play today.
