Echo Lake Country Club traces its origins to May 1899, when a group in Cranford, New Jersey, established a nine-hole club on Lincoln Avenue at South Union Avenue. That original layout was designed by Willie Dunn, the architect behind Shinnecock Hills. Several early members gained wider recognition in amateur sport, among them Max Marston, who won the national amateur championship, Eddie Wild, a seven-time club champion, and Dean Mathey, a two-time national clay court tennis doubles champion.
After thirteen years, the club purchased the Harper Farm on Springfield Avenue in Westfield and commissioned Donald Ross to lay out a new course, completed in 1913 at 6,247 yards and par 72. The clubhouse was built on a high bluff above the lake, where it still stands. To mark the move, members teed off at the Lincoln Avenue site and played roughly three miles through farmland and town to the new 18th green.
In 1919 architect Bob White was brought in to lengthen and rework the back nine, building six new holes from the 11th through the 16th.
