Medford Lakes Country Club traces its origins to the late 1920s, when Medford Lakes was a popular vacation community in the New Jersey pines, roughly eighteen miles southeast of Camden and within reach of Philadelphia. Local resident Leon Todd pushed for a golf course to round out the area's recreation, and in 1929 the Medford Lakes Development Company purchased the 115-acre Shrider Farm for that purpose. The Scottish-born architect Alexander H. Findlay was engaged to lay out and build the original nine holes.
Findlay, often called the father of American golf, was both a leading player and a prolific designer credited with some two hundred courses, among them Tavistock, Llanerch Country Club and Burlington Country Club. At Medford Lakes he worked water and trees into a layout that is short in length with little elevation change. Play began in 1930, and in 1942 the course was incorporated as the Medford Lakes Country Club, with Charles Morrison serving as its first president until 1946.
