Deal Golf & Country Club
About Deal Golf & Country Club
Deal Golf & Country Club traces its origins to the early 1890s, when railroad financier and shipping magnate George Washington Young bought 135 acres in West Deal for a country estate. Young was part of the group behind the Jersey Shore's first golf course, a nine-hole layout designed by Lawrence Van Etten. With only minor alterations, those holes survive today as the 1st, 2nd and 12th through 18th. The founders played the course for three years before formally organizing as the Deal Golf Club in 1898 and building a clubhouse that remains the oldest in continuous use in New Jersey.

A short nine for women followed in 1899, and a second nine was added to the main course in 1900, stretching it to 6,495 yards. Early members also enjoyed boating on Deal Lake, tennis, archery, croquet and lawn bowling.
