Rockingham Country Club
About Rockingham Country Club
Rockingham Country Club, known locally as "The Rock," has been a fixture in Newmarket since the early 1930s. The course took shape on farmland near historic Rockingham Junction, and in 1933 local attorney and entrepreneur Erban Fellows bought the property and helped turn it into a spot for recreation and community gatherings. Accounts from the era place an early clubhouse beside the neighboring Rockingham Ballroom, which opened a year later and drew visitors from across the Seacoast.

The layout was designed by Manuel Francis, a course builder, superintendent and turf innovator who got his start on projects tied to architect Donald Ross. Francis designed several courses in the 1930s and developed Vesper Velvet bentgrass, a hardy strain later used widely in New England.
Club lore includes a round of 27 shot in the early 1940s by professional Les Kennedy on the original, shorter layout; Kennedy later led the 1949 U.S. Open after the first round and played the 1950 Masters.
