Carter Country Club in Lebanon, New Hampshire, opened in 1923 as a Donald Ross design and remains his only nine-hole course in the state. The layout measures about 3,000 yards to a par of 36, with four sets of tees to suit a range of abilities.
The hilly terrain, strategically placed bunkers and two ponds give stronger players a test around the greens, while the course stays approachable for beginners and casual golfers. It retains the character of a vintage design: modest yardages, small greens, blind shots and an emphasis on short recovery shots.
Ross, often described as the grandfather of American golf course architecture, was known for designs regarded as both challenging and fair. By his death in 1948 he had more than 400 courses to his name, among them Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina.
