Elks Country Club occupies a stretch of land on the north side of Columbus, Nebraska. The 18-hole course opened in 1965 and was laid out by architect Dick Phelps, a member of the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame whose work with Kevin Atkinson also produced Oak Hills in Omaha (1967) and Heritage Hills in McCook (1981).
The club traces its beginnings to a group of roughly 100 people who, after much discussion during rounds at Columbus' Wayside Country Club — today's Van Berg Golf Course — committed to building a full 18-hole layout on 120 acres northwest of town.
