Atkinson-Stuart Country Club is a semi-private nine-hole course built by its members in 1971. It sits beside Mill Race Park, with its lake and campgrounds, on the edge of Atkinson in north-central Nebraska.
Most of the terrain is level, though the opening three holes roll across bumps and swales. The first plays to the crest of a knoll, leaving a choice between continuing down to a green some 20 feet below or carrying the rise and taking a chance on the landing. Prairie meadow full of wildflowers and native grass separates several fairways and forms a demanding rough, while small cedars, pines and cottonwoods frame the playing corridors. A group of five connected, clear cascading ponds, added in a more recent construction project, comes into play on four holes.
