About Cape Fear Country Club
Cape Fear Country Club in Wilmington dates to 1896 and is the oldest private country club in North Carolina. It was started by a small group of Wilmington men who had taken up the then-new game of golf.
The original course sat on the grounds of the former Hilton Plantation north of the city, in what was at the time a public park. The club later moved from Hilton Park to the north side of Oleander Drive, and finally to its present site on the south side of that road. The clubhouse has been rebuilt four times since 1900, growing from a modest cottage into the building used today.
The club has a long tournament history, most notably as host of the PGA Tour's Azalea Open from 1949 through 1971.
