About The Country Club of North Carolina

The Country Club of North Carolina sits in the Sandhills near the border of the Village of Pinehurst and Southern Pines, on a 900-acre tract of wooded, rolling land. The site includes a 60-acre lake formed by damming three streams, named for John Warren Watson, the Philadelphia engineer who owned the property from the 1920s and hoped to build a golf course and hotel there; his house and boathouse still stand on the lake's western shore.

The club was founded in 1962 by a group of North Carolina businessmen — Dick Urquhart, Hargrove "Skipper" Bowles, Griswold Smith and James Poyner — who wanted a central place for members to play golf and socialize, and who recruited more than three dozen charter members.

The original eighteen, with nines called Longleaf and Dogwood, opened in December 1963 and later hosted national championships. Willard Byrd added a third nine, Cardinal, which opened in 1970, and Robert Trent Jones designed an adjoining nine in the late 1970s.
