The Pines routes through the pine thickets of the Albemarle region, with wide fairways, small elevated greens and generous chipping areas around them. The course and its practice facilities have been fully renovated, with bermuda fairways and A1/A4 bentgrass greens rebuilt to USGA specifications. Tom Clark, of Ault and Clark Associates, redesigned the layout in 2004.
Measuring 6,700 yards from the championship tees, the course asks for accurate approach shots and a sound short game when greens are missed. Four sets of tees accommodate a range of abilities, and the mix of scoring chances and sterner holes keeps the round varied. Because many second shots play slightly uphill to elevated greens, the course tends to play a little longer than the card suggests.
