About Duke University Golf Club

Duke University Golf Club traces its origins to the early 1930s, when Duke figures including coaches Wallace Wade and Eddie Cameron and President William Preston Few surveyed parts of Duke Forest and considered the idea of a university course. Plans were eventually drawn by architect Perry Maxwell in 1941, on ground now occupied by the Duke Faculty Club, but construction was shelved after the United States entered World War II.

The project returned after the war on a different 120-acre tract, chosen for its notable elevation changes across mildly rolling land and for fairways set apart from housing. The property reflects the North Carolina Piedmont, with meandering streams, hardwoods, tall pines and shrubbery throughout. Duke turned to Robert Trent Jones Sr., then based in Montclair, New Jersey, who designed the course in the mid-1950s. Dumpy Hagler served as Duke's golf coach from 1933 to 1973.
