About Bill Roberts Golf Course
Bill Roberts Golf Course began in 1925 as a nine-hole layout called Last Chance Golf Course, a nod to the 1864 Last Chance Gold Strike that led to the founding of Montana's capital city. It was later renamed for Bill Roberts, who served as the course's golf professional and greenskeeper from 1945 to 1965. During his years there, water was brought to the property, grass greens replaced the oiled sand surfaces in 1951, and numerous cottonwoods were planted. The grounds also served an unusual purpose in 1927, when Charles Lindbergh used them as a landing strip during a touring stop in Helena with the Spirit of St. Louis.

Expansion to 18 holes came with architect Robert Graves, with Tom Roe shaping the new ground, and the City of Helena opened the full public course in 1976. A renovation program begun in 1990 added new tees, greens, bunkers and ponds, along with irrigation and 360 trees, finishing in 1993 under architect Carl Thusen.
