Gulf Hills Golf Club dates to 1927, when the Branigar brothers of Chicago developed the property in Ocean Springs as a resort complete with a golf course, a clubhouse and thirteen upscale homes.
Those original residences were built without kitchens or laundry facilities. Residents took their meals at the clubhouse, and clubhouse staff collected, cleaned and returned their laundry.
Local lore links the resort's founding to Chicago crime figure Al Capone, who is said to have used it as a secluded retreat. Traces of a speakeasy and a gambling casino can still be found on the property.
