Lockwood Municipal Golf Course opened in 1965, built largely through volunteer labor and donated materials. The land was given by Myrtle Smith on the condition that it serve as a park, and Nile Amos, Charlie Martin, Jim Dustman and Dr. Harold Bauer took up the idea of creating a golf course for the community. Outside financing was explored through the Farmers Home Administration but judged too costly.
Instead, residents contributed money, and local farmers brought their own equipment to work and seed the ground. The City of Neosho supplied plugs for the greens, while Meeks Lumber Co. provided a truck and driver to haul sod, which was loaded and planted with help from the local football coach and others. Hickory Hills Golf Course donated the first greens mower, and Nile Amos was hired as the course's first greenskeeper.
