About Fulton Country Club
Fulton Country Club traces its origins to September 1916, when a group of Fulton businessmen circulated a letter calling a meeting to discuss forming a country club devoted to golf, tennis and other sports, and intended as a social center for the town and county. Forty-six men signed the Articles of Agreement, setting out aims that ranged from the physical and intellectual development of members and their families to the promotion of good citizenship.

Organized as the Callaway Investment Company, the founders bought 40 acres near Fulton from the estate of Sarah Smith. Her husband, Elkanah Smith, a mill owner, had built the family home on the land in 1840, and a small family cemetery holding the Smiths, five of their children and two grandchildren still sits on the present course.
The Smith farmhouse was converted into the clubhouse under M. F. Bell, who remodeled the interior, added a wraparound veranda and replaced the ground-floor windows with French doors. Thomas Aitken, a Scottish-born St. Louis sportsman, designed the nine-hole course.
