About Ely Golf Club
Ely Golf Club is a nine-hole course in Ely, Minnesota, set in the north woods and operated as a non-profit corporation. Its origins trace to the 1930s, when a six-hole layout was established during the period of United States Steel's mining activity in the area. By the late 1940s it had grown into a rugged nine-hole course, and traces of that early design remain in play today — the ninth green, which plays almost as though it were two separate putting surfaces, incorporates part of an original green.

By the 1980s a full reconstruction was needed. A group of volunteers spent eight years on design work while contending with funding shortfalls. In the summer of 1989, the owner of a local excavating company brought in heavy earth-moving equipment and agreed to flexible repayment terms, and his crew shaped the current nine holes. Modifications continue as playing and aesthetic conditions are refined.
