About Pontiac Country Club
Pontiac Country Club traces its origins to the Christmas week of 1940, when Frank and Elizabeth Syron decided to purchase a rundown, bankrupt course west of Pontiac and give it a new name. Frank had spent 14 years as head golf professional at a private Michigan club and was known as a teacher — among his pupils was Babe Didrikson Zaharias — as well as a tireless promoter of the game.
The early years were lean, and in some seasons the fairways were mown by hand. After the war, Frank drew players such as Byron Nelson, Bobby Locke, Jimmy Demaret, Chick Harbert and Wally Burkemo, along with trick-shot artist Paul Hahn, to the club for free exhibitions, and play steadily grew.

A fire in April 1953 destroyed the newly remodeled clubhouse, which was uninsured, but the family chose to rebuild. Son Lloyd Syron, a 1957 Michigan Amateur champion who played collegiately at Notre Dame, returned in 1958 to begin the family's second generation at the club, later joined by his brother Frank Jr., also a PGA professional.
