About Treetops North Gaylord Michigan
Treetops in Gaylord traces its roots to the Sylvan Knob Ski Area, opened in 1954 by Ouelette "Lin" Meade with two tow ropes and six slopes. Early instructors included Al Wieland, a WWII veteran who became a certified professional ski instructor; a ski run cut in 2006 was named "Al's Bypass" in his honor. Wieland departed in 1982, leaving the hill in the hands of physician and ski instructor Dr. Michael Samalik.

Meade sold the area in 1983 to auto parts manufacturer Harry Melling of Melling Tool Company, who set out to build a full resort. After adding the 40-room Sylvan Inn, the Haus Lounge and further lodging, Melling commissioned architect Robert Trent Jones Sr. to design the property's first golf course, beginning the resort's transition into a golf destination.
